Every so often there is a hippie in Hollywood that wants to indulge in his/her romance of the flower power era & wants to go east in search of answers(read movie jackpot). There's only one problem, flower power is dead, as much as I want it to be alive & kicking, it is still dead. Now only if Mike Myers would've accepted this fact, we wouldn't have had a movie that is such a disaster. Ok disaster is a strong word, but come one, I could count on all the moments I had a laugh on on one hand.
Plot(may contain spoilers) -
The movie starts off with a white guru, Guru Pitka(Mike Myers) who went to school in India & now wants to make a name for himself in the US in the celebrity fix it/spirituality/self-help business. Guru Pitka is hired by the owner(Jessica Alba) of a Canadian hockey team to help fix their star players(Romany Malco) life. Why, the star players wife is having an affair with the goalie(Justin Timberlake) of the opposing team. Guru Pitka also has an ulterior motive, be the number 1 dude in the guru business. BTW Guru Pitka wears a chastity belt.
Critique/Critics View -
Now, the plot seems fairly decent with room for a lot of humor but unfortunately, the movie fails to deliver. Guru Pitka seems to deliver lines & a wink at the camera hoping to get the audience to laugh but this routine gets to you after like 2 times & guess what, the movie is littered with it. The movie fails to make you laugh through atleast the first half of it.
After the first half though, the movie does have a couple of laughable moments, but thats it.
I have to admit though, I liked French Goalie(Justin Timberlake) character. Now only if they would've expanded a little more on him or if they'd have made our start player(Romany Malco) as weird as Justin Timberlake, it might have added some fun. I think the movie was too indulgent(read - too focussed on Guru Pitka) & the love of the east(India).
Conclusion
Spending $8.50+tax for this movie was an absolute waste of my hard earned money. Seriously folks, think again, this movie is not worth watching in the theater. Maybe if you want, rent it when it's out at blockbuster.
